The Best Plan To Build A Maloof Rocker

Woodworkers are visual. I think we can all agree that one-on-one instruction with an instructor is the best option. It is not always possible. Travel is costly and who has more vacation time? Nonetheless, we learn more when we see the work completed. Herein is why woodworking DVDs are so important. If you cannot get to the class, bring the class to your shop. Additionally, you can watch and learn at your pace, and watch any technique over and over until you get it.

Sam Maloof, a legend of woodworking, died in 2009. While a true Maloof rocker will never be built again, there are woodworkers building Maloof-style rockers they are doing a great job of it. You’ll have a new must-build list if you have ever seen these rockers, or the Sam Maloof original. From what Ive seen of this rocker, its a tricky build. The parts are sculpted and not simply milled and cut to size. A DVD is essential for this project. Full-size patterns will make it possible to complete the project.

Charles Brock spent many years studying the Maloof rocker. His must build list was first notched in 1983 and he has been building theses rockers for clients ever since. Its taken time to get the process fine-tuned. He also tried his hand at teaching. One of his students was featured on Martha Stewart Show. Click here to see the video.

In addition to in-class teaching of how to build the rocker, Brock has taken the time to create a DVD of the process as well as producing full-size plans along with a companion book everything youll need to build the chair without attending one of his Georgia-based classes. You can purchase the entire package at shopwoodworking.com. Click here to order.

The DVD contains 103 minutes of instructional video, while the companion book has 48 pages and 69 photos. The patterns are full-size, not drawn to scale. You can bring the printed sheets to a copyshop to have them enlarged. Brocks website states that full-size patterns are available to every woodworker so they can build the rocker. Because the pattern geometry is integrated into the design, it simplifies construction. The patterns have valuable information printed on them to help you identify key areas of importance. They are printed on heavy paper and should be glued or transferred to appropriate pattern material for long term shop use (as explained in the book).
